Mary Lawlor has been a midwife in homebirth practice since 1981 in southern Vermont and New Hampshire, and recently opened the Monadnock Birth Center in Swanzey, NH, adding this option for women and families to her practice. She has a Masters Degree in Counseling from Leslie University in Boston. Mary was active in successful legislative efforts to license midwives in both Vermont and New Hampshire, and serves as a Midwife Advisor to the Office of Professional Regulation in Vermont, helping to oversee the practice of midwifery in the state. She was a founding board member of the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM), and has served as President of the board since 2004. As President of NACPM she has had a leadership role in developing an agenda for the organization that includes a campaign, recently underway, to increase women's access to midwifery care by securing federal recognition for Certified Professional Midwives. She has also led the board in supporting state midwifery associations in their efforts to secure licensing for midwives in all 50 states, and in involving CPMs in coalition work with national women's organizations to support health care reform through policy work. Mary had a leading authorship role in An Issue Brief: Certified Professional Midwives in the United States, a collaboration document recently released by the national organizations that played essential roles in the formation of the CPM credential and in the ongoing support for the profession. In addition to serving on the IHPC Steering Committee, Mary is a member of the board of directors of Sophia's Hearth in Keene, N.H., an organization that supports families through direct service programs, and trains professionals who work with young children.
